Jodi Toohey an Executive Officer at Gateway To Training in the Darling Downs region, welcomes the opportunity to help young female founders bring their startup vision to life. With experience enhancing employment skills and building the capacity of rural and regional communities, Jodi’s an invaluable asset to the Launchpad activator team.

With a family-centred approach and an acute awareness of the barriers women face when establishing a business, Jodi brings fresh insights into the realities many young female founders encounter.

“I’m thrilled about the opportunity to work with local women, help them turn their startup ideas into a reality, and take them to the next level,” Jodi says. “Many local women have successfully launched their own startups, paving the way for others. Knowing that others have already blazed this trail makes it feel much more achievable for aspiring entrepreneurs in the community. This program will show them just how attainable it is.”

Many female founders are paving the way for those who come after them, identifying potential challenges, and offering invaluable insights into startup life. Programs like Knoei Launchpad, can equip women with the tools and advice they need to successfully get started.

“Recent startups in the region reflect a wide mix of community needs,” Jodi says. “Whether it’s fashion, health and wellness, or industrial sectors, many founders are bringing solutions to everyday needs and challenges.”

While innovative thinking and a creative spirit are often the driving forces behind entrepreneurs, many women struggle to find the time to fully invest in their ideas. Balancing caregiving responsibilities and trying to nurture a startup idea often leaves women unsure where to start, and that’s typically the biggest hurdle.

“The biggest barriers we continually see are balancing work and family, particularly with young families,” Jodi agrees. “A lack of access to mentors and inadequate training and skills development, can also hinder progress.”

Regional female founders face even greater challenges, but that doesn’t mean success is impossible. In fact, those that live regionally will often be the first to tell you that their community is what truly supports them.

“Building a strong network is crucial, particularly for female entrepreneurs in regional areas,” says Jodi. “Networks offer much more than contacts; they provide access to valuable knowledge, resources, support, and a strong sense of community. Being part of a network empowers women to enhance their business skills, build resilience, and thrive in their entrepreneurial pursuits.”

Programs like Knoei Launchpad give young women with startup ideas a place to plant that seed and watch it grow. With the right support and resources, anything is possible.

If Jodi could give one piece of advice to a young woman with a vision, who wants to start a business today, it would be: “Believe in your vision and don’t be afraid to try multiple times. Mistakes are valuable learning experiences.”
